Halsey and Alice first saw the work in Fujino's Kyoto studio during the 2004 trip with NISHI Maya to purchase works for MFA Boston Contemporary Clay exhibition. Alice "re-discovered' this work in 2012 when looking at the photos she took during the 2004 visit when she was creating Halsey and Alice's presentation for the Maui Arts & Cultural Center opening of the Soaring Voices exhibition. The Norths’ where then able to finally acquire the piece for their collection.

In 1999, Miyanaga Rikichi received the name Tôzan from his father and became the third Miyanaga Tôzan, succeeding to the leadership of a ceramics family that has played an important part in Kyoto’s transition from a traditional to a modern center of ceramic art. Tôzan III was a student of two giants of the postwar Kyoto art scene: ceramic sculptor Tsuji Shindô (1910–1981) and Yagi Kazuo, founding member of the Sôdeisha group. Tôzan majored in sculpture at Kyoto City University of Arts from 1954 to 1958, studied sculpture for three further years at New York City’s Art Students League, and became a member of Sôdeisha in 1970.

“Technical innovation is a hallmark of many works in their collection, including a biomorphic vessel by Takiguchi Kazuo that sits like a stone walrus in the living room. Halsey describes how the artist rolls out the clay on a room-sized piece of canvas and, with a pulley system, gathers the corners of the cloth together. Then he gently paddles the hollow form into a seamless shape with a little torn opening at the top."

In her review for Art in America of Contemporary Clay: Japanese Ceramics for the New Century, Leila Philip wrote: "A 2003 abstract vase by Tsujimura Shiro, famous in Japan for his theatrical approach to the making of tea-inspired wares, is particularly noteworthy. This rough hunk of wood-fired stoneware was, according to the artist, buried for 10 years before he allowed it to be viewed. Whether this burial was literal or metaphoric, the artist's self-imposed drama resonates."

Press Release

Lacoste/Keane Gallery presents the second exhibition in a two-part series, the show and sale of important works from the Halsey and Alice North Collection II: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics from January 19 to February 16, 2019. The first part, Contemporary American Ceramics was presented December 8, 2018 to January 5, 2019.

Halsey and Alice North are founding leaders of The North Group Inc., which has guided many non-profit organizations with fundraising, planning and development for over 30 years. They are passionate supporters of contemporary ceramics and have assembled one of the foremost collections of contemporary Japanese ceramics and American ceramics in the USA. Since downsizing their New York City abode, they have appointed Lacoste/Keane Gallery to find new homes for their large collection.

The Norths are leaders in the field of collecting Japanese Ceramics.  The groundbreaking exhibition Contemporary Clay: Japanese Ceramics for the New Century was built around their collection and shown at the MFA Boston and the Japan Society NYC accompanied by a catalogue.  Numerous pieces from that show are featured and offered for sale in the current exhibition at Lacoste/Keane Gallery. Museum groups have toured the Norths’ home and works from their collection can be seen at the MFA Boston, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Freer | Sackler Galleries/Smithsonian/Washington DC, Peabody Essex Museum, Mint Museum, and Portland (Oregon) Museum of Art.

Each work comes with extensive documentation to provide the audience a full history, context and provenance. As diligent supporters of ceramic art, the Norths have fostered over the years, close friendships with the artists through studio visits, interviews, cataloguing works and acquisitions. For each of the exhibitions at our gallery, they will be giving a PowerPoint presentation at the Collectors Preview and a walk through at the Public Opening Reception. Works will be available for sale online and at Lacoste/Keane Gallery.
